Renovations Underway at Flint’s Capitol Theatre building
The Spencer Agency expands into the heart of Flint

An advertising agency is pouring tens of thousands of dollars into renovating a portion of Flint’s iconic Capitol Theatre building. The Spencer Agency, a full-service advertising company, is moving from Mundy Township to the front part of the Capitol Theatre building to be part of Flint’s downtown revitalization.

“I’m looking forward to bringing life back to the front of the theatre building,” says Joshua Spencer, CEO of the agency he founded in 2001. “For decades people have been talking about renovating the theatre, and I’m honored to be one of the people making it happen.”

Crews are working day and night to complete the renovations, which span three floors facing East Second Street, scheduled to be complete by the end of October. When finished, the front portion of the theatre building, right underneath the marquee, will be transformed into a high-tech creative office space with an aura of a Las Vegas night club.

“It will be a very dramatic space with dark walls and vibrant pops of color,” said designer Judi Gibbs of the local design company Grand Interiors by Judi. “The theatre building’s architectural details have the old classic look of the city, and then when we add the chrome, bright colors, and cool lights, it will be very classy.”

Gibbs said the design fits the personality of the young advertising agency. “It’s going to attract a young crowd,” she said. “People can come for business and also hang out. It’s a look for a new generation who will be working downtown.”

Local contractors and dozens of area companies are being employed in the renovations. Once settled in their new space, The Spencer Agency plans to expand and bring between 40 and 50 new jobs to downtown Flint, along with internship opportunities.

“We’re a creative company that’s going to draw new creative people to the area,” Spencer said, explaining that his agency and many of their clients have seen rapid growth despite the current recession. “In a time of growth I decided I want to bring the new business to Flint and not take it elsewhere.”

The Spencer Agency has developed advertising campaigns for nationwide clients including retail, automotive, and nonprofit industries.
